The far-flung and remote areas of hill region
of Uttaranchal are bereft of technical institutions. Farmers here were not
getting good yield due to lack of technical know how. Taking this into
consideration, HARC selected a few progressive farmers from this region and
developed them as barefoot scientists (para technicians) for providing
agricultural extension services in the remote and difficult terrain areas.
At present a cadre of 88 barefoot scientists provide services in their
respective villages and clusters in the area of crop protection &
management, farm planning, demonstration of agricultural technologies and on
the spot solutions to the problems that are being faced by the farmers and
their associations. HARC regularly conducts orientation and training
programmes for these para technicians to enhance their skills and capacities
so that they are adequately equipped to provide services to the farmers,
SHGs, Federations and Cooperative in the areas of pre-harvesting, harvesting
and post-harvesting methods.
